Goodman Serial Number Lookup

Goodman serials are ten digits, and the first four are the year and the month it was built, so 0601… is January 2006. The same code works for Amana and Janitrol units.

Serial number age lookup

1. What are you checking?

Does the label print a manufacture date? Look for MFG DATE, MFD or DATE OF MFR. A printed date beats any decoder, so enter it if you have one.

Where to find the serial number on Goodman equipment

Goodman, Amana and Janitrol units all have a rating plate listing the model and serial numbers:

  • Outdoor AC or heat pump: on the side or back panel of the cabinet, often near the electrical access cover. On older units it’s a metal plate; on newer ones it’s a printed sticker.
  • Gas furnace: inside the lower blower compartment door. Switch the power off at the service switch before taking the door off. Some furnaces also have a sticker on the side of the cabinet.
  • Air handler: on the side of the cabinet or behind the access panel.

A Goodman serial is ten digits with no letters, for example 0601123456. The model number is the one with letters, such as one beginning GSX, GMVC or ASPT, and describes the product line and size.

How the Goodman date code works

This is one of the easiest serials to read:

  • Digits 1–2: year. 06 is 2006, 98 is 1998.
  • Digits 3–4: month. 01 is January through 12 for December.
  • Digits 5–10: production sequence.
Year (2 digits) + month (2 digits) + 6 digits Older Amana units (pre-Goodman) use different formats.

Goodman has used this layout since the company started making its own HVAC equipment in the 1970s and 80s, which makes it one of the most reliable codes to decode. If the first four digits give a month above 12 or a date in the future, check you’ve copied the serial and not the model number.

Goodman, Amana, Janitrol and Daikin

Goodman was founded in Houston in 1975. It bought Janitrol in 1982 and Amana’s heating and air conditioning business in 1997, and Daikin bought Goodman in 2012. Today most of this equipment comes from Daikin’s large plant west of Houston.

  • Janitrol units built under Goodman use the same code.
  • Amana-branded HVAC built since Goodman took over also uses it. Older Amana units, from when Amana was a separate appliance company, may not; the decoder will tell you if it can’t read one.
  • Daikin-branded residential units built in the US share a lot with Goodman and Amana, but we treat Daikin separately until its serial formats are verified.

How long does Goodman equipment last?

EquipmentTypical life
Central air conditioner12–17 years
Heat pump10–15 years
Gas furnace15–20 years

Goodman is a value brand sold through a large network of independent contractors, so installation quality varies a lot, and installation matters more than brand. A correctly sized, properly charged system with clean filters will reach the upper end of these ranges; an oversized unit that short-cycles, or one installed with a poor refrigerant charge, often won’t.

Goodman’s long warranties (many units carry a 10-year parts warranty when registered, and some have lifetime compressor or heat-exchanger coverage) help cushion repair costs on a unit that fails early, but they don’t change how long the equipment physically lasts.

Common late-life problems

  • Outdoor coil leaks. Formicary corrosion (tiny pinholes in copper coils) affects equipment from many brands. Repeated recharges are a sign the coil is failing.
  • Capacitors and contactors. These cheap parts fail regularly at any age and are not, on their own, a reason to replace a system.
  • Furnace ignition and pressure-switch faults. These are often caused by blocked vents or condensate drains, not worn-out equipment.
  • Cracked heat exchanger in an old furnace. This is a replace-now finding, because it can leak carbon monoxide.

What to do with your result

Under 8 years: check the registration and warranty status before paying for parts. Goodman’s registered-unit warranties are often generous, but you’ll typically still pay for the labor.

8 to 15 years: keep it serviced. For a major repair such as a compressor, a coil or a heat exchanger, get the price of a new system first. If the repair is more than about half of that, replacing usually makes more sense.

Over 15 years for an AC or heat pump / 20 for a furnace: plan a replacement. If an older AC still runs on R-22 refrigerant, a leak can be expensive to fix, which often makes replacement the better deal.

Frequently asked questions

How do I read a Goodman serial number?

Look at the first four digits. The first two are the year and the next two are the month. 1507123456 was made in July 2015. The rest is a production sequence number.

How old is my Goodman furnace?

Find the serial on the rating plate inside the furnace's blower door (turn off the power first) and enter it above. The first two digits give the year straight away.

Do Amana and Janitrol use the same serial format as Goodman?

Modern Amana and Janitrol HVAC equipment is built by Goodman and uses the same year-month code. Amana units made before Goodman bought the brand in the late 1990s may use a different format.

How long do Goodman air conditioners last?

About 12 to 17 years for a central AC and 15 to 20 years for a gas furnace, the same range as other major brands when they're properly installed and maintained.

Is Goodman owned by Daikin?

Yes. Daikin bought Goodman in 2012. Goodman, Amana and Daikin-branded equipment now share engineering and production.
